Finding the right lawyer for your case | Legal Affairs

Lawyers practice different areas of the law, so it’s important to find a lawyer that can assist you in a case you are involved in.

Asking a personal injury lawyer to help with a criminal law case may not be the best move if you want to win your case – the lawyer might even reject your case because it’s not something they practice in their work.

To find the best lawyer for your case, you should find one that commonly practices and has skills in the type of law you need help with, according to Patrick J. Perotti, senior partner at Dworken & Bernstein Co., L.P.A. in Painesville, and Larry Zukerman, managing partner at Zukerman, Lear & Murray Co., L.P.A. in Cleveland.

“It all depends upon what type of lawyer they’re looking for and what type of activity they’re looking to have the lawyer work…there are lawyers who really do every type of work,” Zukerman said. “The first thing that you should do is figure out what problem you’re looking to solve. Once you, the potential client, determine what the problem you’re looking to solve is, then you can embark upon the journey of finding council.”

In order to find someone that can best represent your interests in your particular case, you can go online to start researching lawyers in the area, he explained. However, a better way to go about finding a lawyer and getting reviews from real people about their work is by asking a friend if they can refer you to someone.

If you don’t want to ask someone in your personal life, you can call the Cleveland Bar Association, he suggested. The association has a referral service full of lawyers that are “already vetted” and are able to represent people in multiple different cases.

Donald Trump suffered legal setbacks in his Georgia and Florida cases yesterday, capping off a week of court losses for the former president, who’s facing four criminal indictments.

Election interference case: A Georgia judge ruled that Trump’s First Amendment right to protest the results of the 2020 presidential election didn’t protect him from the state’s charges. [NBC News]

Classified documents case: A federal judge in Florida rejected efforts to dismiss the case over the Presidential Records Act, saying it didn’t allow Trump to keep the documents once federal authorities asked for them back. [Miami Herald]

Premier League recruits extra legal help due to volume of ongoing cases

The Premier League has been forced to utilise extra legal help in a bid to get through several ongoing cases before the deadlines outlined in their own regulations.

Everton’s appeal hearing took place last week, with a decision from the independent commission expected by mid-February — but further Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) cases against both Everton and Nottingham Forest are subject to strict timeframes which the Premier League is not allowed to breach.

In addition, Tuesday represents the one-year anniversary of Manchester City being charged with 115 breaches of financial rules, a highly-complex case whose timeline is governed by the independent commission.

An ongoing investigation into Chelsea over possible breaches of financial regulations and negotiations over the proposed EFL ‘New Deal’ is only adding to the workload.

It is understood that while the Premier League usually engages external lawyers for significant matters — usually the London-based ‘magic circle’ firm Linklaters — the sheer volume of cases, as well as the constant need to keep on top of more ordinary regulatory matters, means they are being forced to do this at an unprecedented rate.

The Premier League’s own rules dictate that Everton’s second PSR case, alongside Nottingham Forest’, must be concluded by May 24 — just under a week before the league’s AGM, a hard deadline where the next season’s shares are divided up.

These rules were introduced after pressure from clubs to regulate the PSR process — the relevant cases must be heard by April 9, with the independent commission deciding their punishment soon afterwards, before the May 24 appeal backstop.

Bangladesh’s Yunus vows to help poor despite legal woes

Bangladeshi Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus vowed Sunday to overcome scores of court cases that his supporters say are politically motivated to achieve his environmental and economic policies.

“Our dream is to create a new world,” 83-year-old Yunus told reporters outside court, after he was formally granted bail in his appeal against a six-month prison sentence in a case widely criticised by human rights groups.

Yunus is credited with lifting millions out of poverty with his pioneering microfinance bank but has incurred the wrath of Bangladesh’s longtime Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has accused him of “sucking blood” from the poor.

Hasina, who was sworn in for a fifth term this month after a landslide victory in an election boycotted by the opposition, has made several scathing verbal attacks against the internationally respected 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner.

His conviction on January 1 related to labour law violations, but lawyers said Yunus faces at least 170 other cases, including major corruption charges that could see him jailed for years if found guilty.

He denies all wrongdoing.

Yunus, in an emotionally charged speech, said he had dedicated his life to supporting those most in need and was “committed” to continuing his work.

His “Three Zero” plan is aimed to slash carbon emissions, end unemployment and cut poverty.

“We have chased a dream,” Yunus said. “We have incurred the annoyance of someone because of chasing this dream,” he added, without specifying names.

In the most recent case, Yunus and three colleagues from Grameen Telecom, one of the firms he founded, were accused of violating labour laws when they failed to create a workers’ welfare fund in the company.

Yunus alleged the case was brought by a government department, but Minister of Transport Obaidul Quader said the “case was filed by the workers”.

In exchange for probation, Powell struck a deal to admit to six misdemeanors in a conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, and agreed to testify against other alleged accomplices in future trials ― the most prominent, of course, being Trump.

Honig said the possibility that Powell could rat out Trump in the Georgia racketeering case, and in special counsel Jack Smith’s federal election interference case, is potentially “devastating” for the 2024 Republican front-runner.

Powell had been one of Trump’s most loyal enablers, Honig said, and she provided legal advice that Trump relied on in his attempt to manipulate the election results.

“This is a major breakthrough for prosecutors, potentially a devastating development for Donald Trump, because what’s gonna happen now is Sidney Powell is going to testify for prosecutors in Georgia, and presumably she’ll also be prepared to testify for Jack Smith in his federal case in Washington, D.C.,” said Honig, a former prosecutor.

“She’s not indicted in that case, but she’s listed as a co-conspirator in that case,” he said. “She’s going to be able to provide insider information that could be really devastating towards Donald Trump.”

Powell’s highest value as a witness would be as a you-are-there guide for jurors to the nefarious discussions that allegedly took place before the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection, Honig said.

He then won his case after taking Transport for London to an appeal tribunal, which ruled signs for the scheme “do not provide adequate information” over the charges.

The adjudicator concluded: “I cannot be satisfied that the Low Emission Zone signs are authorised and lawful.”

However, the tribunal is not of a high-enough level to be legally binding in other courts.

So Noel has started a GoFundMe to look into a test case to prove all signs in the extended Ultra-Low Emission Zone (Ulez) break road traffic laws.

If successful, it may mean drivers charged £12.50 a day for their older, polluting cars will get their cash back.

Ex-Trump Attorney Hits Him With Free Legal Advice After He Vows To Take The Stand

Donald Trump received legal counsel from one of his former attorneys live on television on Wednesday, and it didn’t cost the ex-president and 2024 candidate a penny.

Timothy Parlatore, who quit Trump’s legal team in his classified documents case in May over purported strategy disagreements, told CNN’s Jake Tapper that Trump’s boast that he’d “absolutely” be willing to take the stand and testify in front of a jury during one of his upcoming trials would likely backfire.

“Personally, I don’t like any of my clients taking the stand in a criminal case,” Parlatore explained. “It’s not something they’re required to do and I have not generally had any clients take the stand unless they first undergo a very rigorous cross-examination by me and pass.”

“More times than not, when they’re going through that process, they’ll say ‘Tim, stop, time out, I don’t believe myself. I’m not testifying,’” he added. “I can’t see it being a good idea here.”

Tapper recalled Trump’s deposition in writer E. Jean Carroll’s civil case against the former president, in which she accused him of raping her in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s.

During his videotaped testimony, Trump confused Carroll for his second wife, Marla Maples, in a photo and defended his infamous “Access Hollywood” tape remarks. A jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming Carroll.

Tapper suggested putting Trump on the stand to defend himself “would be risky.”

“It is,” the lawyer said. “And that’s kind of an illustration of why. It’s an uncontrolled environment, you don’t necessarily know what the client will say. Even a very well-practiced client can say things they will regret after the fact.”

After Trump’s recent indictment, he got legal advice from an unlikely source

Former President Donald Trump said Thursday night that he was indicted on charges of illegally storing classified documents from the White House at Mar-a-Lago and that he must make his first appearance in Miami federal court Tuesday.

“The corrupt Biden Administration has informed my attorneys that I have been indicted, seemingly over the Boxes Hoax,” Trump posted on his platform Truth Social.

According to the historic indictment unsealed Friday, the 76-year-old Palm Beach resident faces 37 felony charges. The 49-page charging document alleges that the former commander in chief described a Pentagon “plan of attack” and shared a classified map related to a military operation, among other top secret information.

While many of the ex POTUS’ fans are disturbed by the news, one controversial person came out the woodwork to offer his legal advice.

That would be O.J. Simpson, who was infamously acquitted on charges he murdered his wife Nicole Brown and her friend Ron Goldman in 1995.

The fallen Buffalo Bills star, 75, was fortunate to be able to afford a so-called Dream Team of defense lawyers that included Robert Shapiro, Johnnie Cochran, F. Lee Bailey and Barry Scheck.

In a Twitter video, Simpson, who served nine years of a 33 year prison sentence after being convicted of armed robbery in Las Vegas in 2007, sits outdoors among some trees and talks to the camera.
